Langyao Red Vase (Qing Dynasty)

Langyao Red Vase (Qing Dynasty) (Height: 42.5 cm, Mouth Diameter: 12 cm, Collection of Tianjin Art Museum) Langyao red is the name of a glaze color for porcelain. It is a type of red glaze imitating the gemstone red glaze of the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty, produced during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It was named after Lang Tingji, the superintendent of the kiln. This is the most vibrant type of red glaze, renowned for being “as bright as a mirror, as smooth as jade, and as red as blood.” The Langyao red vase introduced here features a well-proportioned shape and a thick, glossy glaze with a glass-like texture. In addition to large crack patterns, the glaze surface also exhibits irregular hairline streaks. The bottom edge appears deep red due to the accumulation of flowing glaze. The interior is coated with white glaze. This piece is among the finest extant examples of Langyao red porcelain.
