“Dayazhai” is the hall name of Empress Dowager Cixi, and Dayazhai porcelain was specially made for her. Dayazhai porcelain is almost entirely famille rose porcelain. Famille rose porcelain is a new type of overglaze painted porcelain that was developed during the Kangxi period, influenced by the enamel painting techniques, and matured during the Yongzheng period, reaching a state of perfection in the Qianlong period. The success of famille rose porcelain lies in its departure from the single-line flat painting method of wucai porcelain. Instead, it uses a white glass base for patterns, and various decorative patterns are rendered using shading techniques. The colors are much richer than those of wucai porcelain, and the decorative patterns are more expressive, with a mix of light and dark colors, yin and yang contrasts, and a soft, elegant, luxurious, and charming style. Although the craftsmanship of famille rose porcelain gradually declined after the Jiaqing period, Dayazhai porcelain, being made specifically for Empress Dowager Cixi, is exceptionally exquisite and can be considered a revival of famille rose porcelain.   1. Shape: Dayazhai porcelain mainly includes daily use items and display ceramics, often using traditional designs from past dynasties. Common items include high-footed bowls, high-footed plates, covered bowls, various types of narcissus flower pots, square flower pots, round flower pots, and flower jars. Daily use items are often produced in sets, and the flower pots in display ceramics typically come in large, medium, and small sizes. The shapes usually retain styles from previous dynasties, being mostly full, thick, and dignified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Decorations: Dayazhai porcelain generally features colored glaze grounds, such as yellow, blue, purple, and green. It is painted with famille rose, with bright colors as the main tone, occasionally having fresh and elegant works. The decorative patterns mainly feature flowers and birds, with common themes including wisteria, peonies, plum blossoms, hydrangeas, magnolias, camellias, grapes, lotuses, crabapples, bamboo and rocks, thrushes, magpies, wagtails, parrots, ribbon-tailed birds, and more. Additionally, there are auspicious patterns like “Yutang Wealth,” “Continuous Success,” “Many Sons and Blessings,” “Longevity with Pine and Crane,” “Double Happiness,” “Happiness to the Eyebrows,” “Three Friends of Winter,” “Blessings as Vast as the East Sea,” and “Longevity as Steady as the Southern Mountains.” The combinations of patterns are mainly single motifs, sometimes with appropriate motifs, and the patterns are vividly portrayed with meticulous brushwork. The same theme might be depicted in different ways on sets of items, and the decorative methods on a single piece are also very ingenious. For example, the pattern on the outer wall of a flower pot, when unfolded, would be a complete picture, showcasing the rich imagination of the ceramic craftsmen. Additionally, the mouths of narcissus pots or flower pots in Dayazhai porcelain often feature a continuous pattern of blue enamel decorative borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

Inscriptions: Dayazhai porcelain is marked with the regular script “Dayazhai,” usually written in red on the lower part of the item’s mouth, with the seal “Heaven and Earth United in Spring” in an oval seal script, along with a double dragon playing with a pearl pattern. Some items also have “Eternal Prosperity and Longevity” in red regular script on the base. The “Heaven and Earth United in Spring” mark has slight differences between daily use items and display items, requiring collectors to observe carefully in practice.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
