Northern Chinese White Porcelain: Historical Development

Unexpected Northern Origins

Despite the earlier dominance of southern celadon in Chinese ceramic history, the earliest documented white porcelain emerged in the northern regions during the Northern Qi (550–577 CE) and Sui (581–618 CE) dynasties. This contradicts expectations, as southern kilns were more technologically advanced at the time.

Literary Records

  1. Tang Dynasty Texts
    • Li Zhao’s Tang Guoshi Bu (唐国史补, Supplement to the State History of Tang) mentions Xingzhou white porcelain (邢窑白瓷) from Neiqiu as a widely used luxury item during the Kaiyuan to Zhenyuan eras (713–804 CE).
    • Lu Yu’s The Classic of Tea (茶经) praises Xing ware for its “snow-like” (类雪) whiteness and “silver-like” (类银) luster.
    • Duan Anjie’s Miscellaneous Records of Music (乐府杂录) describes how musician Guo Daoyuan used Xing porcelain bowls as percussion instruments, highlighting their dense, resonant quality.

Archaeological Evidence

  1. Northern Qi (575 CE) – Fan Cui’s Tomb (安阳范粹墓)
    • Earliest known white porcelain (still primitive):
      • Thick, bluish-white glaze
      • Coarse body (except for a few refined pieces)
      • Shapes and decorations mirroring contemporary celadon
  2. Sui Dynasty (Late 6th–Early 7th Century)
    • Zhang Sheng’s Tomb (595 CE, Anyang): Shows transitional improvements.
    • Ji Wei’s Tomb (605 CE, Xi’an) & Li Jingxun’s Tomb (608 CE, Xi’an):
      • Fully mature white porcelain:
        • Pure white glaze (no yellow/green tint)
        • Fine, high-fired body
        • Elegant forms (e.g., flasks, bowls)

Technological Significance

  1. Breakthrough in De-ironing
    • Northern kilns mastered iron-removal techniques to achieve whiteness.
  2. Precursor to Later Wares
    • Xing ware (邢窑) paved the way for Ding (定窑) and later imperial porcelain.
  3. Cultural Impact
    • White porcelain became a luxury commodity (Tang texts) and even a musical medium.
