Covered Jar with Heavenly Steeds and Waves in Doucai Palette

The jar has a contracted mouth, short neck, full rounded shoulders, a tapered body, a concave foot, and a flat-topped cover. The decorative motifs are outlined and shaded in underglaze blue, with additional colors filled in. The top of the cover is painted with a red flying elephant against an underglaze blue wave-pattern ground. The side of the cover is decorated with a band of underglaze blue waves. The shoulder and lower body each feature a band of plantain leaves in underglaze blue outlines filled with yellow enamel. The main body of the jar is adorned with four heavenly steeds—one red, one yellow, and two in underglaze blue—galloping atop blue-green waves, interspersed with underglaze blue ruyi-cloud motifs. The center of the flat base is inscribed with an underglaze blue regular script mark: “Tian” (天).
