Ming Dynasty, “Tian” Mark, Covered Jar with Kui-Dragon Design in Doucai Palette

The jar has a contracted mouth, a short neck, a full rounded shoulder, a tapered body, a concave foot, and a flat-topped cover. The decorative motifs are outlined in underglaze blue and filled with red, green, and yellow enamels. The top of the cover is painted with a coiled kui-dragon filled with green enamel; the side of the cover is decorated with floral sprays filled with red enamel, bordered by four underglaze blue lines. The shoulder and lower body are each adorned with a band of stylized lotus petals, filled with yellow enamel. The main body of the jar features two kui-dragons, interspersed with underglaze blue ruyi-cloud motifs. The kui-dragons are depicted with elephant-like trunks, two legs, and stylized floral tails, each holding a lotus flower in its mouth. The center of the flat base is inscribed with an underglaze blue regular script mark: “Tian” (天).
