Symbolism and Status: The gourd shape (hulu 葫芦) is deeply symbolic in Chinese culture, representing good fortune, longevity, and harmony. It is also associated with Daoist immortals. Such a vase was likely used for refined display, ritual purposes, or within the imperial court, signifying high status and cultural refinement.
2. Ming Yongle – Hallmarks of the Era
Gourd vases from the Yongle period are typically exquisitely elegant. The curves of the two bulbed sections and the connecting waist are executed with precision, creating a sense of restrained grace and perfect balance.
As with other Yongle pieces, they often bear no reign mark, relying on their sublime quality for attribution.
3. Sweet White Glaze – A Unified Surface
The challenge here was to achieve a perfectly even, uninterrupted glaze over the vase’s complex silhouette. This required absolute control over the glaze formulation, its application, and the kiln’s atmosphere. A successful example exhibits a seamless, “juicy,” and lustrous glaze that enhances the form without obscuring it.
4. Anhua Decoration – Subtle Embellishment
On a gourd-shaped vase, the anhua decoration required thoughtful adaptation to the form.
The decoration might be divided, with different but complementary motifs on the upper and lower sections.
Common patterns could include delicate trailing vines (emphasizing the gourd shape), lotus scrolls, or classic floral sprays. The anhua technique ensures the decoration complements rather than competes with the iconic form.
